Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967), 1949-1963 first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, his achievements include the establishment of a stable democracy in defeated Germany, a lasting reconciliation with France, a recovering limited but far-reaching sovereignty for West Germany by firmly integrating it with the emerging Euro-Atlantic community (NATO) and his engagement for creating an European community (the later EU).
